Well once again we’ve seen three of the Big Four fighting it out for the top spot in the Premier League. It should be stated that Arsenal and Liverpool have switched places from last season, however and Man U are 8 points behind with a game in hand. While I am an avid Liverpool supporter and am enjoying giving my students a ribbing because Man U are behind us, I am worried. While Man U demolished Stoke City and Chelsea comfortably put away West Bromich Albion, Liverpool struggled to finish in a game that should have been just as comfortable.
As Megson, Bolton’s manager was quoted in the Daily Mail put it ‘They didn’t rip us apart,’ said Megson. ‘In fact, if it hadn’t been for the intervention of the referee and a shambles on our side for the opening goal, it might have been a different story.’ While Liverpool dominated and Megson is most definitely wearing rose coloured shades, he is right that we should have put the game beyond doubt 5 times over. With a title hunt this tight, goal difference IS going to matter in the long run, but not as much as turning possession and chances into goals and making sure you walk away from tight games with maximum points.
Not that I’m despairing mind you, we are winning the games we drew last year and I squad is starting to show some nice depth approaching that of Man U and Arsenal, especially when you can call on Torres to come off the bench in the 60th minute!
